Five small islands had been connected into a large Bombay Island by reclamation.
At its south end was constructed a fort (citadel), which would grow into the city of Bombay.
On Elephanta Island to the east is the cave temple of UNESCO World Heritage.
(From "Bombay Gothic" by Christopher W London, 2002, India Book House)
The Gateway of India had not yet been built in the era of this map.
The green part is the Bombay Green, or the later Elphinstone Circle.
Henry Bartle Frere intended to remove the ramparts (blue)
to build Neo-Gothic public buildings.
